You can use the government form 1040EZ if you are single or married and have no dependents. Your taxable income must not exceed $100,000 combined. You cannot have received interest payments of over $1,500.00. The only credits that you can receive are the earned income credit or the making work pay credit. You do not have any deductions to claim for medical, disability or other tax credits. You do not have additional income to claim from investments. The 1040EZ is for basic tax filing purposes only. Anyone needing to claim dependents or other exemptions must use a 1040 or 1040A tax form.

My Spouse Died During The Tax Year Do I Still File As Married On The 1040EZ tax form?

If your spouse dies, and you file the 1040EZ tax form, you will still file as married on the form for that year. During the next tax period, if you do not remarry, you will begin filing as single on your taxes again. However, if your spouse died before you filed the previous year’s taxes you may have to claim as single for the current year. To verify this, look at when you filed your previous taxes. If it was after your spouses death you must file as single. If it was before your spouse died you can still file as married in the current year.
