Can I Get my Tax Return Faster If I E-File?
Many folks dread tax return season and wait until April 15 to file their tax returns. That’s not the case for those expecting Uncle Sam to send them a refund.
E-Filing is Fast
Not too many years ago the fastest way to file your tax returns was to get them in the mail as quickly as possible after January 31. You were then prepared to sit back and wait at least 6 weeks. The later you filed your tax return, the longer your tax refund check would take to arrive. For those filing after April 1, there was usually at least an 8 week wait. When the direct deposit option was introduced, it shortened the wait time on your refund to 3 – 4 weeks, but the tax returns still had to be mailed to the government. With the advent of e-filing, the interval has been dramatically reduced. The majority of filers receive their direct deposit within 2 weeks!
E-Filing is Easy
There are countless e-file programs available; many on the internet are free. You can also purchase a tax return program at your local office supply, department store, book store or warehouse club. Find a program you are comfortable working with, enter the information, and click submit. It’s that easy. If you use the same program the following year, it will remember your information simplifying the process further.
E-Filing is Safe
Safety is always a concern when using the internet for any type of financial transaction. When e filing your tax return, your most important ID information, your Social Security number, is entered. Be sure you are using a secure web site. Look for the lock symbol in the address bar. Another indicator is the letter “S” which should be listed in the address bar following http. A secure site’s internet address will begin with https://.
